Drills
Generally, 2 Saturdays each month during the school year from 7:30 am (0730) to 3:30 pm (1530), Cadets and Leaguers meet at a drill site to participate in “Drill”. Drill consists of various training exercises to strengthen the mind, body and spirit. Each drill has PT (physical training), marching exercises, and various leadership trainings as well as classroom work. Often, members of the Navy and other armed forces visit and share their real life experiences and tips with the cadets to help them get a picture of how life in the Armed Forces actually is. Ultimately we teach them about honor, courage, and commitment. These are the USNSCC (United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps) core values and are crucial to life anywhere, whether it is in the military or in civilian life.
New recruits are expected to begin attending these drills immediately. If the cadet has not been issued uniforms yet, he or she is expected to come to drill neatly dressed and properly groomed. Physical Training (PT) is done at all drills unless otherwise indicated on the Plan of the Day (POD). Cadets should bring proper PT gear, footwear and water. A list of the required PT gear can be found on the Uniforms page.
The POD will be posted on the website on the POM/Calendar page by the Tuesday prior to the drill. Each cadet is required to respond to their Squad Leader as soon as the POD is posted as to whether they will be attending drill. This can be done via the electronic attendance form on the POM/Calendar link. If there is no communication, it will be assumed that the cadet will be at drill. If they are not there, and have not communicated their absence, it will be marked as an unexcused absence. There is a minimum 75% drill attendance required for the year.
The POD is subject to change and cadets are encouraged to check the website on the Friday before a scheduled drill to check for any last minutes changes.
Cadets are responsible to bring their own sack lunch to drills, unless otherwise indicated on the POD. It is important to bring water to each drill as well.

Advancement
In order for cadets and officers to rank up (advance) they must complete coursework. Both cadets and officers can start working on their coursework as soon as they would like. Sea Cadets may begin with the first correspondence course entitled Basic Military Requirements (BMR). The BMR must be completed before Sea Cadets will be allowed to attend summer or winter recruit training so it is important that this coursework be completed as soon as possible. League Cadets may begin with Part I of the NLCC syllabus. Midshipmen and adult officers may begin studying the Officer / Midshipman Study Guide. More information on required coursework and advancement can be found on the Advancement Requirements page of this website.

Parents
Our unit has created a Welcome Aboard Handbook that may answer many of your questions. Please take a moment to review the handbook to get acquainted with our unit policies. Many things about the Naval Sea Cadet Corps may be new, especially for parents who have had no previous experience in the naval services. It is not unusual for parents of a new cadet to feel “lost”. If so, remember while this is all new to you, we have an open door policy with all parents. If after reading this booklet, you have additional questions or concerns, talk to your son or daughter's Commanding Officer.
Bear in mind that if your son or daughter decides to join either the Naval Sea Cadets or Navy League Cadets, you have to some degree joined too. The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a non-profit, volunteer organization that relies heavily on parents to support the efforts of volunteer officers and instructors working with your children. As such:
